2019-20 Kindergarten Applications

As we continue to receive applications for the 2019-20 school year, it would be helpful to know if you are planning on enrolling a sibling!  NOW is the time to apply online!     https://pb-pa.client.renweb.com/oa/index.cfm?memberid=1929

We will be scheduling assessments for all Kindergarten applicants in January.

Please mark your calendar for PUCS Pre-K day on January 25th.

COMMUNITY CORNER notes from our CIS Coordinator Georgette Ayres

Do you need volunteer hours?  My agency, Communities In Schools Pittsburgh Allegheny County (CISPAC), has partnered with Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh to help new pediatric residents learn about the social and community factors that impact children’s health and well-being. The objective is to provide trainees with experiences they do not get inside hospital walls.   To do this, the residents will be going into the community to visit programs and talk with providers and the people they serve.  I am looking for a few parents who would be interested in meeting as a group with the resident to share their thoughts, experiences, and struggles with raising kids. The next resident is scheduled to be with me on Wednesday, December 19th.  The meeting would be 30 to 45 minutes long and scheduled between 10:15 AM and 11:30 AM.  If interested in participating please send me an email georgette.ayres@pucs.org by December 12th.

Is anyone planning to see Mary Poppins Returns over the holidays?  (I hear Lin-Manuel Miranda is in it for all of you Hamilton fans.)  Is anyone interested in seeing it on January 2nd (early in the day) with other students and families from PUCS?  In the past I have arranged for groups to attend showings of movies at Phoenix Theaters in North Versailles. If we can get 25 or more people we can get discounted tickets, a snack pack (optional), and possibly a theater to ourselves. Historically the tickets have been $4 and the snack pack which includes a 16oz drink, small popcorn, and a gummy candy is $5.  Please complete the 2 question Surveymonkey by December 11th.  If there is enough interest I will contact the theater to make arrangements.

Parent Association Meeting Information

The first Parent Association meeting of the school year is scheduled for Monday November 5, 2018 (6pm)

Jennifer McCaslin, Licensed Professional Counselor, MA, NCC, LPC, is coming to speak about anxiety in children. There are many ways that children suffer from anxiety and Jennifer will name some common identifiers as well as present ways to help children cope with their anxiety.  “Having Generalized Anxiety Disorder can make it hard for kids to focus in school. Because with GAD, there is almost always a worry on a kid’s mind. GAD makes it hard for kids to relax and have fun, eat well, or fall asleep at night. They may miss many days of school because worry makes them feel sick, afraid, or tired.”  Kids Health.org

Please plan to join us for a discussion on this very important topic and an opportunity to ask questions. Also, there will be a few PUCS announcements. Dinner and childcare will be provided. Please RSVP for childcare to office@pucs.org.

If you have multiple children, please place separate orders for each child and/or family photo.  All orders are processed separately and ship separately through the automated lab.

Select your packages, package add-on or a-la-carte items and add them to your cart, then proceed to checkout.  (If you have multiple children, we suggest you create an account at checkout as it will keep you from having to re-enter much of the same information on an subsequent order).

We accept PayPal, Credit Card, and Debit Card.

Once completed, you will receive an Order # as well as receive an email confirmation of your order.  This information will automatically be captured at the camera stations and await your child to be photographed so we can assign their image(s) directly to that order.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day – A grand and wonderful total of 125 guests visited our students on Friday October 12! We enjoyed family photo sessions, an informative Dove Presentation by Mr. Tom Berich, a majestic Dove release and then our guests came to 813 South for refreshments, toured the building and heard about what is next for PUCS.  They can join us in our excitement! Thank you middle school and parent volunteers!

Sacred Spaces Tour – PUCS hosted 70+ visitors on Saturday, from greater Pittsburgh interested in our building, school history and our plans for the future. Our Artwork from Art Expression Day was featured on the walls and on tables, and people loved it!  The celebration with food and DJ in the Sanctuary was a delightful time and we are proud of our school and our place in Wilkinsburg.  Thank you to Jennifer Chenoweth for her leadership on this event and to our parent and student volunteers!

Our small but mighty group demonstrated excellence, perseverance, and team spirit as they supported one another through challenging practices and meets and worked hard to improve their times. Please be sure to congratulate our novice girls’ team for their second place team trophy from yesterday’s Winchester Thurston Invitational!  Congratulations to the 2018 PUCS cross country team for a great season!

The Garden Needs You!

The Outdoor Classroom and Garden have been bustling with activity already this fall, especially thanks to our unit on birds!  In addition to learning how to observe the details of nature and care for our space and plants, we are now painting a bird bath made from terra cotta pots.  We are also very much in need of the following:

A few handy people to put together a metal shed (from a kit).

Date TBA based on availability as a group.

One or two handy people to pour a simple foundation for the shed, anytime.

LOTS of 2L plastic bottles WITH CAPS… for making bird feeders

Old wooden spoons/spatulas… for making perches on the bird feeders

Pinecones, for making bird feeders

School Chess program:  Please email Christy if you would be interested in an after school chess program. An outside group is offering the program. We would hire a PUCS parent to work with them.

Parents-Have you ever considered being a chapel speaker for PUCS?  Or have you heard a speaker and thought he or she would be a good speaker for PUCS kids?  Contact Christy Wauzzinski at christy.wauzzinsk@pucs.org if you have an idea for a PUCS Chapel speaker.

Taking Time

Taking Time

If it would ever cool off around here, the air would clear enough to see the summer constellations of Lyra and Cygnus brightly overhead each evening.   Thanks to the lengthened night, you can also see the winter marvels of Orion, Taurus, and Canis Major each morning.  Such is the marvel of autumn stargazing: you can see all the good stuff and get a good night’s sleep in between.

When I took students out for a night walk at PUCS Camp, I pointed out the constellations, and especially the planets, that we could see on that moonlit night.  Venus had already set, but Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars brilliantly revealed the plane of the solar system.  We then focused our telescope on the moon’s craters and Saturn’s rings.  I wish we could plan Camp around a clear night every year!

Invariably, each time I point these nightly wonders out to people, someone asks, “How do you know this?”  They’re typically not asking this to challenge my information; they genuinely want to know where it’s coming from.  “I just do,” is my typical response.  I’ve been staring at the stars since I was little, got my first telescope when I was 11, and wore out the library’s copy of “Find the Constellations.”  I still look at sky charts and pay attention to the movements of the sky almost every night.

But it isn’t information I was born with.  My love for it is possibly innate, but my understanding of it is not.  This took work.  I’ve read a lot, studied a lot, watched the sky a lot.  Though the journey starts with love and curiosity, mastery, and even enjoyment, are the result of hard work.  Loving work… but work nonetheless.

When our kids get frustrated about what they don’t know, we can remind them that mastery is not innate.  All we are born with is the raw material: mastering skills, developing understanding, even knowing how to learn, take hard work.  There is nothing broken about them if they don’t have a skill or an understanding they wish they had.  In fact, thinking you have it all together is generally a greater problem!

Loving something – like writing, singing, or astronomy – means having an internal drive to master it.  Often, this love can sustain our curiosity, even when mastery gets tough.   But it can never shortcut that mastery.  Teach your kids to be patient, and keep at it.

The Garden Needs You!  * A few handy people to put together a metal shed (from a kit). The Outdoor Classroom and Garden have been bustling with activity already this fall, especially thanks to our unit on birds!  In addition to learning how to observe the details of nature and care for our space and plants, we are now painting a bird bath made from terra cotta pots.  We are also very much in need of the following:

Date TBA based on availability as a group.

* One or two handy people to pour a simple foundation for the shed, anytime.

* LOTS of 2L plastic bottles WITH CAPS… for making bird feeders

* Old wooden spoons/spatulas… for making perches on the bird feeders

* Pinecones, for making bird feeders

Gratefully helping our kids get dirty!
